1. 1Knew Agni samidhā2, for the people3, coming dawn4; like milchcow5. Like the ones who call6, properly rise7, shooting up on high8 like a bird9, proper suns10, to the right place11 where there isn’t any sorrow12.

1. This is the fifth Mandal/Book of R’gved.

R’shi: Budh Ātréý and Gavishŧhir Ātréý.

Devtā: Agni.

Chhand/Meter: Trishŧup.

The Mandal contains 87 Sookts/hymns.

The first Sookt/hymn contains 12 Mantrs/Verses.

2. ‘Abodhyagnihsamidhā’.

‘samidhā’ does not mean normal fuel here. It’s here a figure of speech.

The person who is Agni, i.e, leads to light, should not be ignorant of his/her surroundings.

The past tense, ‘abodhi’, ‘knew’, is used here.

It means, Agni, the person leading to light, should never proceed until and unless the knowledge of this fuel, samidhā, has not become the past tense for him/her.

The warning must never be taken lightly.

It’s a serious matter.

3janānām prati’.

It’s not serious for himself only.

The future of other people is also involved with it.

4. ‘āyatīmushāsam.’

He did not know the fuel, ‘samidhā’ only; he knew the ‘coming dawn’, ‘āyatīmushāsam’ as well.

That is the light, Agni has and the others, who are not Agni, do not have.

He knows very well that his devotion to lead the others to light is never fruitless, even if at present it may seem so.

The dawn is coming eventually.

5. dhénumiv’.

It will not be fruitful to the others only.

It will be fruitful to him/her self as well as a milchcow.

When someone leads others to light, he/she makes friends with them knowingly or unknowingly.

It benefits him/her eventually in this worldly life as well as in the life hereafter.

Noble deeds are never fruitless, if they are really noble.
